How To Write A Good Paramedic Resume

When writing your resume, keep the recruiter in mind. How would you impress him? Likewise, how would you make his job easier? After all, recruiters go through hundreds of resumes every day.

To write a good Paramedic resume, always focus on quality over quantity. It’s not the amount of information you share but its overall value to your objective – to be hired as the new Paramedic.

Use the Combination Format

This may be a surprise for some of you who have been using the more popular reverse-chronological format in your earlier resumes.

With a profession that requires professional licensure and certification, the Combination format offers 2 advantages.

  • The Combination format uses the key feature of the Functional format which is to highlight your technical qualifications by placing them in the top third section of the resume.
  • You still present your Work Experience section in the reverse-chronological format whereby you lead-off from your current or most recent experience.

Thus, by using the Combination as your resume format, you accomplish both objectives. First, you confirm your qualifications as a Paramedic. And second, you are still able to highlight your extensive work experience.

With the Combination, the sections of your resume will be arranged in this order:

Make Your Resume Easy to Read

Keep the recruiter in mind when you’re thinking about the type of font for your resume.

His eyes could be tired or strained from reviewing a lot of resumes. Don’t make his job harder by choosing a style and size of the font that will give him a migraine.

  • Use a professional-looking font style such as Arial, Calibri, and Cambria.
  • Font size 12 to 14 makes your text easy to read.
  • Organize your key information with the use of bullet points.

Keep it Short

As we mentioned at the start of this section, the quality of information over quantity:

  • Include only relevant information.
  • Keep your sentences short but direct to the point.
  • Stay to a single page – unless you’ve been a Paramedic for more than 10 years.

Personal Interests? Why Not?

No one really puts a “Personal Interests” section anymore in a resume because the information is not really relevant to the job you are applying for.

However, a “Personal Interests” section could help your application if it includes information that’s relevant to the demands of the job.

For example, as a Paramedic, you should be physically fit.

If your hobbies and interests include physically-demanding activities such as weight-lifting, mountain climbing, and gymnastics, sharing this information in a “Personal Interests” section could give your application a boost.

Proper Training as a Paramedic

If you completed a four-year course in a Science-related field, you still need to go through proper training as a Paramedic. A typical Paramedic course includes the following subjects:

Acquire a Professional License and Certifications as a Paramedic

As a Paramedic, you will be required to take and pass a national or state exam. In the United States, paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are mandated to take exams issued by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

A prerequisite for the national exam is the completion of a Paramedic training course from an accredited agency.

Acquire Advanced Paramedic Training

To be clear, you don’t have to take advanced Paramedic training to get hired. But completing additional and advanced training will certainly add more value to your resume.

Also, if you are an EMT who wants to transition to a career as a Paramedic, we recommend that you complete advanced Paramedic training.

Physical Fitness

Physically-lifting and moving incapacitated patients, carrying heavy medical equipment, and maintaining long hours that can be unpredictable is an ideal job for those who are in tip-top shape.

You have to be physically fit to become a Paramedic. If you are frequently out-of-breath, dealing with chronic pain, or cannot adjust to the demands of the job, you may end up compromising the health and safety of your patients.

Ideal Soft Skills for a Paramedic

You may have completed the requisite training and passed the licensing exams but do you have what it takes to become a Paramedic?

  • Check the operating condition of the ambulance and equipment.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repairs, if necessary.
  • Respond immediately to emergency situations.
  • Attend to the patient’s needs right away.
  • Assess the condition of the patient.
  • Perform emergency first-aid treatment, if warranted.
  • Call-in the situation to the hospital.
  • Assist in transferring the patient to the stretcher.
  • Transport the patient to the Emergency Room.
  • Connect the patient to the necessary equipment.
  • Administer medicines and the required fluids.
  • Provide details of the patient’s condition to the attending doctor or nurse.
  • Prepare the necessary reports.

Keep Your Job Descriptions Short
