Advice for Your Quantity Surveyor Job Interview

The job interview may be the most taxing and stress-inducing aspect of the whole application process. Yet, by making the right preparations, you will be able to sail through any challenge you may face. Here are a few tips to help you smooth the way.

Attend to the Basics

As you may already know, there are certain documents that need to be prepared when applying for a job. One of the most important requirements you will have to produce is your Quantity Surveyor resume. Look at our resume templates here on this site for guidance.  However, you do not just need one that was copied off a typical Quantity Surveyor resume examples. Your future employer receives more than enough of that cookie cutter resumes going around. Personal touches aside, keep your resume complete with all the details relevant to the trade and the position and keep it free of any embarrassing errors that speak of an unorganized and scatterbrained personality. Create a resume that speaks volumes about how qualified you are for the job.

Lay Out Your Strategy

One does not simply waltz into the interview room without making advance preparations. For starters, choose the items you will be wearing for the interview. If you have the money, then go ahead and invest in a new business suit or any other appropriate outfit. If not, then you do not need to rob a bank; there have got to be pieces in your closets that would suffice, such as blouses, skirts, dress shirts, or slacks. You will also have to plan your route and means of travel for the day of the interview. Plan to arrive early enough to gain a few moments to compose and calm yourself; it hardly seems necessary to remind you to be on time, but some candidates still need the pointed reminder. Remember, leaving great impressions is not achieved by accident but through planning and hard work.

Be Unfazed by Difficult Questions

An interview would not serve its purpose of weeding out the unqualified if there were no difficult questions. Thus, it would be best if you brainstormed for your answers before the day itself arrives. Here are some of the questions you should practice answering:

  • Cite a particular instance in your past work that makes you fully qualified for dealing with on-the-job crises.
  • Can you describe the requirements of this job as you understand it?
  • How do interpersonal relations relate to your job as a Quantity Surveyor?
  • What makes you so sure that you are suited to this career?
  • Do you see yourself working in the same position for the next 5 years, or do you hope to rise in the ranks soon?

Show Your Interest in the Company

Your interest in the company will be apparent if you ask intelligent, business-focused questions at the end of the interview. Remember not to ask questions that would easily be misconstrued as a lack of knowledge on the field or company. So how do you this? Keep a list of the questions that are left unanswered by your comprehensive research. It is your responsibility to know everything else.
