Advice for your Automotive Engineering Interview

Get To Know The Company And The Position

Before going into the interview, make sure you learn everything you can about the company and the position you are applying for.  A lot of history and information can most likely be found on the company website, if available.  Be prepared to know what exactly the company does and how your position might be unique to the operations.  The interviewers will most likely want to know why you specifically want to work for their company.  On top of what you can do for them, they wish to know what they can do for you.

Review The Job Requirements

Make sure you are familiar with the responsibilities of the position and what is expected out of the person in the role.  Go through the list of duties and responsibilities for the job title.  Think of examples of the skills and/or experiences you have that compare to those responsibilities.  This will help prepare you to answer situational questions you might get.

Have Your Wardrobe Ready The Day Before

Avoid having to rush putting together an outfit by preparing it ahead of time.  Your appearance makes a big difference.  The interviewers will make judgments as soon as you walk through the door.  Avoid procrastinating altogether and arrive at your interview early.

Bring Certificates And Extra Resumes

I assume you have a really solid automotive engineer resume to be able to get the interview.  But be sure to bring additional resumes just in case you are interviewed by multiple people.  It’s always better to be safe than sorry.  In addition, bring any documentation or prior achievements and certificates.  This will provide the employer’s evidence of your achievements listed on your resume.

Rehearse Your Interview Questions

Make a list of general and specific interview questions you think you may be asked.  Come up with answers to each of the questions.  Things do not always sound the same spoken as they do in your head.  So be sure you practice voicing out your answers either in front of the mirror or in front of a few people conducting a practice interview.  Here are some questions you might be asked in an interview.

  • Describe some of your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
  • What made you choose to work in the automotive industry?
  • What experiences do you have with 3D modeling?
  • Describe a problem you ran into as an automotive technician and how you dealt with it?
  • Tell us the difference between MVA and KVA and what you know about them?
  • How do you work under pressure and stress?
  • Describe what a knee point is and its significance to automotive engineering?
  • Why do you want to become an automotive engineer?

Come Up With Questions To Ask

Every interview ends with the question “Do you have any questions for us?”  Do not say no.  Take this opportunity to emphasize your desire to work for the company.  Here are some questions you might consider asking.

  • What aspect of the company do you take pride in the most?
  • What should someone in this position expect to
  • How is someone in this position evaluated in the first six months?
  • How is someone’s success measured in this role?
  • What is the training structure here and what is the process of preparing someone for their position?
  •  What changes do you think the company will go through in the next five years?

Follow Up With The Employer

Be certain that you contact the employer if you have not heard back from them after a week.  You are most likely just one of plenty of candidates for the job.  You want to show them that you want to work for their company.  You can do so by sending a simple e-mail to show your appreciation.
