Advice For Your Electrical Engineering Job Interview
Review Your Undergraduate and Graduate Level Work
Chances are that they will ask you some basic theoretical questions that you will have come across during your years in academia. That is why it is a great idea to review some of the basic fundamental ideas and theories of electrical engineering.
Research The Company And Their Industry
In addition to the theoretical questions, they will ask you, they will also ask you some application-based questions on the exam. These questions may be related to their field and what they do. They want to know how to think and your thought process—and not necessarily if you have the right answer or not. Furthermore, knowing the company you are applying to provide you with some excellent questions you may ask them later when you get a chance.
Look For Good Electrical Engineering Resume Templates
Use our electrical engineering resume example and you can create your own resume in a few minutes. You will only have to edit and replace the paragraphs according to your experience and skills.
Bring A Copy Of Your Electrical Engineering Resume sample
Like any interview, it is a good idea to bring your resume along in case they do not have it with them. That way, you can have them refer to it when you are talking about something specific in your resume.
Dress Professionally
Like all other professional interviews, you should come dressed to impress. A dress shirt with a tie will do, along with dress pants.
Think About The Questions Ahead Of Time
You should always think about what types of questions they will ask you ahead of time and practice them. That way, you are prepared when it comes up. Here is a list of questions you may come across during your interview:
- Why do you want to be an engineer?
- Give us an example where you use logical and rational thinking to solve a problem at work?
- Was there a time when you were forced to work collaboratively with others that whose idea you did not agree with? If so, how did you set aside your differences?
- Can you explain Moore’s Law in your own words to me?
- What is a substation and what are the requirements for setting up a substation?
- What do you feel are your biggest weaknesses? How about strengths?
- What transistor level design tools have you worked with?
- How do you measure the resistance of the earth?
- What previous projects have you worked on and what was your role in them?
- What is the output power equation for solar cells?
After they are done asking you the questions, you should also ask them questions that have been on your mind. Here are some questions you can ask them at the end of the interview:
- What is a typical day here as an engineer?
- How big is the team that I will be working on?
- How strong is the union at this company?
- How long does a typical project last?
- Is there strong collaboration between the different departments and teams?
- What proprietary programs do engineers use at this company?
- Is there a lot of room to grow your career here?
- Does upper management often ask for opinions from lower management or union workers?
- How easily are new ideas implemented here? Is there a lot of red rope in the way of technical innovation?
- How does the company keep track of production and quality of its employees?
- How are salary increases determined?
Follow Up
If you are applying for an engineering position, you most likely won’t hear if you are accepted or denied the position until at least a week or so later. However, that should not keep you from staying in contact with your interviewers. Simply send them a note or an e-mail thanking them for their time will suffice. You should send this a day or two after so that you will still be fresh in their minds. After all, they do interview quite a few applicants. Good luck!
