How To Write A Good Lifeguard Resume

What do recruiters want to see in your resume? Is being a good swimmer enough to be considered for the job? As the job title implies, you are guarding people’s lives. Those who visit the beach or the pool are under your watch and care.

In precarious situations, the difference between life and death can be decided by a matter of seconds. Potential employers know having exceptional swimming skills is a must. Therefore, for them, a good resume should show more than just your ability to move in the water.

1. Prove Your Qualifications

You cannot be a Lifeguard until you have undergone Lifeguard training. A typical course outline for becoming a Lifeguard includes subjects on First Aid, CPR, identifying warning signs, and handling emergency situations.

Most of these training programs take 6 weeks to complete. Moreover, you will have to take both written and practical exams to be certified as a Lifeguard. An employer would want to make certain that a candidate has undergone proper training and has received certification.

  • Indicate that you have been certified as a Lifeguard in the Contacts and Certifications sections of your resume.
  • Write down your certification number or the name of the certifying agency in the Contacts and Certifications sections.
  • Use bullet points to describe the course outline in the Education section.
  • Other certifications that should be disclosed are for First Aid and CPR.

For resort owners, safety of their guests is of paramount importance. Any untoward incident where the resort fails to exercise basic safety measures may irreparably harm its reputation and business.

Resort owners want lifeguards who are committed to guarantee the safety and security of their guests and patrons.

In the objective statement you have to directly state your mission to oversee the well-being of everyone under your watch. You should state your desire to implement better safety measures and procedures to reduce the level of risk to resort guests.

What to Write in a Lifeguard Resume Skills Section

The job of a Lifeguard is not just physically demanding. You should have the ability to make quick decisions during emergency situations. It is also important to have an intuition if safety appears to be an issue. This is critical when there are unpredictable changes in the weather.

Here is a list of qualifications that could appear in your Maintenance resume skills section:

  • Educational attainment; a college degree is not important but is a decided advantage especially if it is in a related field. If you are a high school graduate, indicate your GED score as a reference.
  • Certifications; as a Lifeguard, you should have the requisite training in First Aid and CPR. There is always the possibility of a guest drowning or losing consciousness due to a pre-disposed illness. You should be certified to administer First Aid procedure before medical help arrives.
  • Other certifications and trainings; if you have had training in fields that are related to the job of a Lifeguard that would be valuable information to include.
  • Physical Fitness; even though you may not be required to perform rescue operations every day, a Lifeguard must always be in excellent fitness. State if you’ve participated in competitive swimming or running or at least have had advanced training for rescue purposes. Lifeguards have to be strong swimmers.

What qualifications are HR people looking for in your skills section?

1. Physical Fitness

Certainly, having top-level swimming skills rank high among the list of physical attributes that recruiters will be looking for. However, being a good swimmer is not enough. Maybe you can swim like a dolphin, but what if you had to carry a 220-pound hotel guest?

As a Lifeguard, you must be physically fit. You must have strong legs to have the ability to kick in the water while carrying another person. You should have strong lungs especially when you have to take a deep dive to look for a potential drowning victim.

In addition to swimming, it is a good idea to take up other forms of exercise such as weight-lifting, biking, running, and functional training. If you are cross-training in other sports to supplement your swimming, include these activities in the Personal Information section of your resume.

2. Quick Reaction Time

One of the first rules you will learn as a Lifeguard is the 10/20 rule. This rule states that a Lifeguard must be able to identify a potential problem within 10 seconds and get to the person within 20 seconds.

Thus, having a quick reaction time is very important for a Lifeguard. A split second hesitation might be too late. For sure, the person who is reviewing your resume would want to know if you have a quick reaction time.

If you had an experience where you had to react fast in order to save the life of a guest, include this detail in the work experience section of your Lifeguard resume. Try to be as descriptive as possible. In other words, pretend that you are telling the story to the Hiring Manager.

3. Life-Saving Skills

Once you have the victim on dry land, time becomes a valuable commodity. It will take time before the first responders can arrive on the scene. Therefore, the life of the victim will literally be in the hands of the Lifeguard.

Consequently, this is why it is very important for every aspiring Lifeguard to undergo medical training. You have to learn how to administer First Aid, CPR, and treatment protocols to injuries and other medical episodes.

4. Handling Emergency Equipment

Most of these hotels and resorts have emergency equipment within their premises. Examples of emergency equipment would be defibrillators, oxygen tanks and masks, rubber floaters and dinghies, fire extinguishers, and a stretcher among others.

What to Write and Not to Write in the Lifeguard Resume Experience Section

Resort owners want a Lifeguard with diversified experience. This includes skills, work and capabilities. You have to highlight or present complete details of every responsibility you handled as a Lifeguard in the different stages of your career.

The job of a Lifeguard may seem uncomplicated; they are popularly depicted as someone who spends most of the day overlooking the swimming pool or the beach. But the magnitude of the responsibility is greater than it seems when a human life is at stake.

Your day can be as unpredictable as the weather; one moment everything is calm then before you know it activity becomes frenetic.  

As a Lifeguard, you are not constrained to be on the dock staring out on the ocean or the swimming pool. There is a set of responsibilities that you have to perform on a daily basis. There are standard tasks such as monitoring the area and there are responsibilities that take on a more managerial role.

If you’ve had experience managing a team of lifeguards, emphasize that in your resume. Write down your tasks as Head Lifeguard; from training new lifeguards, to orienting current lifeguards to preparing and updating safety manuals.

Managerial experience tells the resort or hotel owner that you have other capacities other than carrying out rescue operations and administering First Aid.

If you’ve had experience that differentiates you from other lifeguards, include those as well. An example would be working with government safety and health agencies or foundations that ensure environment safety.

If you worked as a Lifeguard only as a summertime job, it is not necessary to include this in the resume. You can share this with the recruiter during the job interview.

If you answered “Yes” to these questions, pinpoint specific responsibilities you handled in your latest or most recent job and present them clearly via bullet point format.

Why the “latest and most recent job”? For the reason that your latest experience best represents your current level of skills and abilities, the recruiter will be mostly focused on this period of your work history.

2. Conduct Research On the Employer

Before writing your work experience section, conduct some research on the employer. Try to find out the following pieces of information:

  • Common accidents in the area
  • Most frequent incident or episode that happens within the area
  • The worst incident that took place
  • The current level of safety protocols in place

The information you gather will give you a better idea of how to present your value proposition to the company.

For example, if most of the incidents that happen are children falling inside the swimming pool then in your work experience section, cite real situations where you saved the child.

Also, if you recommended new regulations or guidelines designed to prevent the future occurrence of such incidents from taking place, include this information as well in the work experience section.

3. Be as Detailed as Possible

An employer would be more confident of hiring an applicant who appears to know his job like the back of his hand than one who seems generic.

When writing your duties and responsibilities in the Lifeguard work experience section, be as detailed or descriptive as possible.

  • Prepared and submitted incident report, inventory of supplies and stocks, and workforce designation report to the appropriate departments.

Lifeguard Resume with no experience

When lives are on the line, the employer may prefer those with experience. If you have an entry-level Lifeguard resume, applying for a job at a popular beach resort or hotel may get your application lost among more experienced candidates.

However, your lack of experience should not keep you from trying! HR may be open to the idea of hiring entry-level lifeguards. Here are some tips that can keep your entry-level Lifeguard resume afloat:

1. Use the Functional Format – If you have scant or nil work experience, or if you have an unemployment gap of more than 4 months, the Functional format will be the best template to use.

With the Functional, the Work Experience section is pushed down the resume. The objective is not to hide it. Instead, you want to draw more attention to your relevant Lifeguard skills.

2. Highlight Your Skills and Achievements – Even if you do not have enough experience, some employers will be open to giving you a try if your skills are impressive enough.

3. Show That You Are Physically Fit – In most job applications, the Personal Information section will not carry much weight. This section only gives the recruiter an idea of who you are and what you do after work hours.

However, the Personal Information section could help you get more interest from the recruiter especially if you have very little experience.

For instance, you can state the physical activities that you do in order to stay in good shape. And it’s not all about swimming! HR people know that in order to get into the best Lifeguard shape, you have to do a variety of sports.

Therefore, if you also run, bike, lift weights or do some type of martial arts it would be an advantage to share these details in your Personal Information section.
