How To Write The Key Sections Of A College Graduate Resume

A resume is divided into sections or headings that summarizes all of the key information about a specific qualification for the job.

These sections are as follows:

Whenever a recruiter goes through a resume, certain questions will pop in his head as he goes through each section. You want to make sure that the summary of information you provide can answer these questions.

Let’s go through each section in detail:

Contact Information

The Contact Information is the first section that the recruiter will see regardless of the resume format you use. Among the questions that runs through a recruiter’s mind when he comes across the Contact Information section are as follows:

  • “Does the applicant live near the office?”
  • “Does the applicant have an email address?”
  • “Does the applicant have a phone number?”

Therefore, the Contact Information section must indicate:

  • Full Name – Last Name, First Name, and Middle Initial.
  • Complete Residential Address
  • Phone Number – Mobile and/or Landline
  • Email Address
  • LinkedIn URL – For those who are looking for a career in IT, Banking and Finance, Sales, Marketing, and Human Resources.

The contact numbers that you provide must be valid. Likewise, your email address must be active and professional. An email address such as [email protected] is professional; [email protected], is not acceptable.

You might be wondering why we are recommending having a LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is the preferred social media platform of professionals, especially recruiters. This is one of the first places that recruiters go to when searching for talent AND when qualifying job applicants.

LinkedIn gives you opportunities to connect with other professionals and reach out to the Human Resource heads of various companies. LinkedIn has a built-in blogging platform that will allow you to write about topics that interest you.

Blogging presents opportunities for you to show recruiters that you may be a fresh college graduate, but you’re aware of industry trends and developments. Trust us, recruiters will skim through your blogs.

To be clear, having a LinkedIn account benefits those who are looking to have a career in the corporate world where career paths and succession plans are in place.

Examples of these types of professions include IT and Technology, Banking and Finance, Human Resources, Research and Development, and Marketing.

Recruiters have a preference for those who appear to be invested in their career choices and LinkedIn offers you the platform to share your expertise – and passion – through blogs and by interacting with community members about special interest topics.

What should you exclude from the Contact Information section?

Which types of information should you exclude from the Contact Information section? Information that has no relevance to the position you are applying for or ones that aren’t specifically indicated in the job ad could only serve as a waste of “real estate space” on your resume.

Examples of information that don’t have to be included in the Contact Information section unless required are:

  • Marital Status
  • Height
  • Weight

As you will find out in the section on resume examples, there’s one profession where it might be advisable to include information on Marital Status and Date of Birth.

Including your date of birth should be fine as you’re a new college graduate and it’s assumed that you’re around 21 to 22 years old.

It’s also perfectly fine to add a profile picture if you want to. We recommend having your profile picture shot by a professional photographer. High- resolution images can be used for your online profile on LinkedIn.

Lastly, there’s no need to indicate “References available upon request”. The Hiring Manager will request for references only when you’re invited for the job interview.

Objective Statement

The Objective Statement formalizes your intent for applying to the job and summarizes the skills and qualifications that make you the ideal candidate. This is the resume section that asks the question, “Why should we hire you?”

As a fresh college graduate with presumably zero work experience, the Objective Statement plays an important role in that it allows you to pitch your value proposition to the employer.

And that’s what the Objective Statement is and why it’s important. If the resume is your marketing brochure, the Objective Statement is the sales pitch – “Why you should hire me”.

Here are a few tips on how to write an Objective Statement that will get the recruiter interested in considering a fresh college graduate:

  • Start off with the skills and qualifications that are relevant to the job. For this, you can refer to the summary of qualifications in the job ad.
  • State your objective for applying for the job. It might sound obvious why you want to get hired but never say “to make money”. Be more prudent and give it a personal touch by mentioning the name of the company you want to work for.
  • Include your key soft skills or personality traits that make you the ideal fit for the job.
  • Keep your Objective Statement short and concise. Write in a conversational manner. Pretend that you’re introducing yourself to the Hiring Manager during the interview.

Skills for College Graduates

The skills section lists down the abilities, competencies, and specializations that validate your qualification for the position. This section answers the question, “Do you have the requisite skills to manage the duties and responsibilities of the job?”

Contrary to what many job seekers believe, recruiters aren’t only looking for the skills that pertain specifically to the position.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of Web Developer, the Human Resources Officer reviewing your resume isn’t only checking if you know JavaScript, WordPress, or Magenta.

And while we’re on the topic of computers, you’ll notice that in the resume samples section, most of the jobs include “Knowledgeable about computers”.
With the pandemic remaining a hot issue for the next few years, having knowledge in computers and software programs relevant to your chosen profession is important because companies have incorporated Internet-based processes into their workflows.

There will always be that possibility you might be assigned work-from-home duties or become designated as a telecommuter.

The HRO also wants to find out if you’re made of the “right stuff” – if you have the personality traits needed to succeed as a Web Developer for the company. These traits might include patience, detail-oriented, analytical, team player, and decisiveness.

Your skills section must highlight your hard skills and your soft skills. What’s the difference and how do you present them in your skills section?

Hard skills are the abilities and competencies that were acquired through formal education, On-The-Job training, apprenticeship, volunteer work, and other avenues where you learned from structured coursework and/or professionals in the field.

Soft skills refer to the personality/behavioral traits that best define who you are and how you might approach the job.

How should you present your hard and soft skills in your resume?

  • Start off with the skills that were specifically identified as requirements in the job ad. Going back to our previous example about the Web Developer position, start off with your certifications in JavaScript, WordPress, Magenta, HTML, Microsoft, Oracle, or whatever program/operating system is required by the potential employer.
  • Include skills that are indicated in the job ad, or if not, skills that are relevant to the position. For example, being bilingual would be a big plus for those applying for the position of Customer Support Agent.
  • Put your soft skills at the end of the section. Don’t put in more than 3 soft skills. Make sure the personality traits that you identify are relevant to the position you’re applying for.

Now, the big question: How can you prove your soft skills? The answer will be discussed in the next key section of your resume.

Work Experience for College Graduate Resumes

The Work Experience section outlines your employment history. It answers the question, “Have you had any practical experience that proves you’re ready to handle the duties and responsibilities of the position?”

Not all college graduates are bereft of work experience. Some graduates found employment while they were still studying. Others found avenues where they could apply theory in a practical setting such as participating in summer programs, internships, and volunteer work.

Then, there are the more enterprising students who started businesses while working toward earning their degrees.

Regardless of your employment background, keep the following tips in mind to make your work experience section more interesting:

  • Include only work experience that’s relevant to the position you’re applying for. Establish relevance by citing specific examples of duties and responsibilities that are the same or similar to the ones required for the job.
  • Present your employment history in reverse-chronological order. This means to lead-off the section starting from your current or most recent employment period.
  • Substantiate your job descriptions with numbers and figures that validate your successes at work.
  • Keep your job descriptions short and concise.
  • Cite examples of the duties and responsibilities you handled that highlight the soft skills you mentioned in the Skills Section. For example:

    “Provide assistance to various team members to help them complete their established deadlines such as working with the backend programmer with the coding of the software.”

Our last tip would be to use the appropriate verb to lead-off your job descriptions. The verb you use must be associated with the types of duties and responsibilities that you handled.

For example, if you worked part-time as a Content Writer, among the verbs you can use for your job descriptions are as follows:

For those who don’t have any type of work experience but chose to spend their free time on extracurricular activities, you can change the title of the section from “Work Experience” to “Relevant Experience”.

Then, you can proceed to make a summary of the extracurricular activities that you participated in while you were an undergraduate. Good examples of relevant experience include:

Education on a College Graduate Resume

For new college graduates, a well-written Education section makes up for the lack of Work Experience. Recruiters that know the position is open for fresh graduates will focus on your level of educational attainment to qualify your application.

The recruiter will think, “Does the applicant have a solid foundation of the fundamentals required for the position?”

The following information must be provided in the Education section:

  • Bachelor Degree attained
  • Minor field of study, if any
  • Name of College
  • Address of College
  • Inclusive Years

What about your Grade Point Average (GPA)? If your GPA is 3.5 or higher, include it in the Education section.

Other information that should be included in the Education section:

  • If you took relevant courses outside those required in your curriculum, include them in the Education section under the heading “Coursework”.
  • If you had achievements of note such as becoming a Dean’s Lister, submitting academic papers that received citations, and winning scholastic awards. Put all of this information under the heading “Awards and Achievements”.

How To Write A College Graduate Resume That Gets You Noticed

Now that you know the sections of a resume and what they’re for, we’ll show you how to put them all together and give your chances of getting invited for an interview a big boost.

In order to come up with a resume that gets you noticed by the recruiter, the sections must flow and complement each other. This is where using the right resume format becomes important.

There are 3 types of resume formats:

  • Reverse-chronological
  • Functional
  • Combination

For the reason that this guide was written for new college graduates, we will only discuss the reverse-chronological and functional resume formats.

The combination format which “combines” the key features of the reverse-chronological and functional formats is ideal for those with extensive work experience or job seekers who want to shift careers.

The reverse-chronological resume format highlights the employment history of the applicant. The work experience section starts off with the current or latest employment period. The structure of the reverse-chronological resume is as follows:

  • Work Experience
  • Education

The functional format shifts the focus toward the job applicant’s technical skills, educational attainment, and other relevant qualifications. The structure of the functional format is as follows:

  • Contact Information
  • Objective Statement

Which resume format is for you?

The choice of resume format comes down to your level of experience and the type of work you handled.

  • Choose the reverse-chronological format if the type of work you did – part-time, summer job, apprenticeship, or freelance – is relevant to the position you are applying for.
  • Choose the functional format if your work experience was related to the completion of your courses such as On-The-Job training and volunteer work.

Do not include work experience that isn’t relevant to the position you are applying for.

The structure of the resume is not set. You can expand some sections to add more information.

For example, you can create a subheading under “Education” for “Coursework” or “Seminars Attended”. The objective is to “leave no stone unturned” and provide as much key information as possible.

You want to convince the recruiter to give this new college graduate a try – your first big break – an opportunity to launch a career.
