Internship Cover Letter Sample And Template

Applying for an internship program will be a challenge. Companies who offer internship programs only allocate limited slots. If the company is highly respected in the industry, you can expect any announcement will be met with great interest. Competition will be fierce; it will be tight so you need to find every conceivable advantage.

Companies that accept candidates for internship programs don’t only look at grades as the basis for qualification. The purpose of the internship is to find potential right-fit personnel in the future. These programs are investments made by a company for their future. If you can get into this program, you have more than one foot inside their door. You could possibly have your entire leg!

Given the level of competition, you must pull out all the stops and deliver a cover letter that will make you stand out from the rest of the field. Although ideally cover letters must be short and concise; one page is the norm, it is not unusual to find cover letters that extend for a second page. This is largely due to the amount of details indicated. When you are trying to stay ahead of the field, your experiences could be the differentiator.

In the introduction, state right away your current level of education and how you came to know about the internship program. Share your level of familiarity with the company. If you have a connection who knows key people in the company, by all means, play that card. It will surely improve the attention span of the recipient for your application. It would also be to your advantage to stress the importance of the internship for you.

In the body, detail the qualifications that make you the perfect candidate for the internship program. If you have done research or projects that are related to the company’s present endeavours let them know and if possible include a few details. If the internship program is relevant to your degree or thesis work, let them know. If you are involved in organizations and associations that focus on related fields, identify what you do and how these are relevant to your qualification for the internship program.

When you close your cover letter, reiterate how your selection would benefit the company and intimate that by choosing you they would be investing in their future. It is always important to never appear presumptuous and remain respectful of the company’s decision.

Dear Mr. Jordan,

I am a 3rd year student in the College of Economics and I came across your advertisement in our college newsletter yesterday which indicated an opening for your company’s summer internship program. ABC Management Consultants is widely regarded as the best property development firm in the country. Your reputation in providing top notch services in property evaluation and research remains unparalleled in the industry. When I read about the internship program, I knew sending this application to your office would be my number one priority for today.

I have been studying Australia’s property sector in the last two years. My interest was spurred by the growing interest of the international community, particularly China, in Australia’s property sectors particularly in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. This early, I have decided my graduate thesis would be to document the increase in property values because these have not been congruent with the weakening of the Australian Dollar and other currencies vis-à-vis the United States Dollar. I have done studies that seek to uncover the relationships between currency fluctuations, interest rate movements and consumer behavioural patterns in the property market.

If selected for the internship program, I am confident it would greatly help in my research and at the same time my existing body of work may be of interest to your company.

Thank you very much and I hope my application merits your consideration.

Yours sincerely,
Matthew Smith
